Lambda too rich 0.98 and below - Oxidation less effective (CO too high)
< 0.98 Oxidation (cleaning up CO + HC) Less efficient
0.990 to 0.980 is within an acceptable range of 0.98 to 1.02
= 1.0 perfect for emission and CAT operation (1.005 to 0.995 good for CAT operation)
1.010 to 1.020 is within an acceptable range of 0.98 to 1.02
Lambda too lean 1.02 and above - reduction less effective (Nox high from CAT)
> 1.02 Reduction (cleaning up NOx) Less efficient

 

 

 

 

This calculator is for USA calculation only and it assumes the following:

  1. The exhaust system is free of air leaks.
  2. The air injection system has been disabled.
The Lambda calculation was originally developed by Dr. Johannes Brettschneider in 1979 to calculate the balance of oxygen to fuel. This version was developed for Smogsite.com by TGB Computing (a computing and publishing company in San Franciso, CA) - many thanks to them for their long hours of hard work on this! Do you think of fuel consumption in miles per gallon, but have to buy your fuel in liters? This script will figure your miles per gallon for you. Enter miles traveled and liters used and the conversion is done for you. (Imperial gallons are used, not US gallons.) Works in IE only.
